TULSA, Oklahoma -

Food on the move is making sure Afghan refugees living in Tulsa, feel at home this Thanksgiving.

Volunteers handed out food boxes to the family Thursday evening.

This is the first Thanksgiving for a lot of families who've had to flee their home country and start over in America.

Food on the Move Executive Director Kevin Harper says across the globe - offering a home-cooked meal is a powerful symbol of connection.

"Food is that great equalizer and it allows you just to open up conversation. And through doing that we've learned a lot about our new Tulsans," he said.

Mahsa Schupp helps interpret for the families. She says the dozens of Afghan families across Tulsa put everything on the line to come here and start their new lives in Green Country

"They were scared and shocked," she said. "They are feeling more and more out of their shell because people around here, they've been showing them kindness."

They've gone through intense hardships - but - if only for a moment - the familiar gesture of offering a meal goes a long way toward soothing the soul.

That's what Harper hopes for. Food on the move volunteers have been delivering meals with her family here since September but Thanksgiving is special.

"Because we just want to show that love and compassion and just have a great time for today. I mean it's Thanksgiving. And like I always say the best way to show that you're thankful is to show that gratitude and pass it on to someone else," he said.
