MUSKOGEE, Oklahoma -

People in Muskogee held a parade today to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream for America.

Those who participated decorated cars, floats, and even horses.

Spectators, some as young as seven, were there to honor MLK’s legacy.

"They said that Martin Luther King Jr. was a good man, and he is respectful to everyone," said Caydence, who is in the 2nd grade.

The parade was put on by the Muskogee MLK Center, which also held a pancake breakfast and parade after-party.

Event organizer Derrick Reed said he decided to go through with the parade because of the importance of the holiday.

"With the pandemic going on, the first thing is should we do it or should we not do it, and then I thought about how endearing this holiday is to a lot of people,” said Derrick Reed, the Director for the Muskogee MLK Center. “Dr. Martin Luther King is someone we can model our life after."

And he said the celebration is not over today.

"After the celebration is over, let's turn our words into deeds and meet needs,” Reed said. “If we want to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s Day, let's celebrate it in the way we live and help others."

This is the 13th consecutive year that the city of Muskogee has honored the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

City leaders incorporated special things into the event to celebrate Muskogee's 150th anniversary.
