Tulsans React To Governor's Proposal To Eliminate Grocery Tax

The Bureau of Labor statistics said the overall prices of goods are up 8.3 percent over the past 12 months. Tulsans are saying eliminating the grocery tax could help them save much needed cash.

According to the Consumer Price Index, there was an increase of 13.5 percent in grocery costs nationwide since this time last year.

Governor Kevin Stitt addressed inflation and the grocery tax on Tuesday. He said the tax significantly impacts those most in need.

"This is the right thing to do. This is a regressive tax. I've been talking about it since 2019 when I first ran for Governor and I found out we were one of only thirteen states that charges groceries. That hurts working families,” Stitt said.

Irene Martin shops at the Oasis Fresh Market where she said prices are within her budget. She said she spends about $75 each week or two, but a break in grocery taxes would be a big help.

"Tax on everything else is pitiful. So this here with a cut in the taxes would make my food go a little further,” Martin said. "I could buy more food or put the money somewhere else where I need to put it."

Eggs are up 40 percent from last year. Cereal, dairy, and bakery products all increased more than 16 percent.

Carletta Eckwood said prices are getting out of hand. "Eggs cost $6. I can't afford eggs. So, that's crazy. $6. I have to choose milk over eggs. I'mma choose milk,” Eckwood said.

Some people are making sacrifices in order to make ends meet.

"We in a recession and everything is high. When you on a fixed income you can only afford to buy, after you pay your bills, then you have enough for groceries. If you don’t, then you have to go without,” Eckwood said.

Earlier this year, the House and Senate passed their own bills on reducing the grocery tax, but couldn’t agree on a final bill to send to the Governor.

Senate President Pro Term Greg Treat said a tax policy working group is examining the best way to cut taxes for Oklahomans.
