A Kellyville woman went to the hospital for a spider bite and left with a cancer diagnosis.

When Sabrena Jones got the spider bite, she didn't think it was too serious and didn't even want to go to the hospital.

“It just kept hurting and kept hurting so I got convinced to go to the hospital,” she said.

The doctor treated her for the bite, did some bloodwork, and ran some tests, including a physical exam. When the doctor pressed on her stomach, it caused pain.

“When she palpated right over it, I was like ‘Oh, yeah,’” she said.

Doctors did a CT scan and found a mass the size of a baseball on Jones’ right kidney. She learned she has stage 3 kidney cancer.

“I was expecting to either find out if it was or was not a Brown Recluse bite and go home,” Jones said.

She is leaning on her faith right now.

“I was quite shocked but I’m a believer in God, so I wasn’t real worried about it because either way I would be in a good place, I’d either be healed or I’d be in heaven,” said Jones.

It might sound unusual, but Jones' overwhelming feeling through all this, is gratitude.

“Everybody was like ‘thank God for that spider’ … thank God for the spider, whatever its name was... little spider," she said.

She wonders if she would have ever discovered something was wrong.

“Had no symptoms at all, that’s why you need to get your checks because how would I ever have known?” Jones said.

She hopes her story encourages people to go to the doctor, even for what might be minor, because early detection can make all the difference.

“Saves a lot of lives if you can catch it early," she said.

Jones had surgery earlier this month to remove her cancerous kidney. Now she'll be talking to her oncologist about what treatment is next.
