Witch's Finger Cookies

Holiday Fare/Dessert
1 Cup butter, softened1 Cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. almond extract
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 3/4 cup flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
3/4 cup whole blanched almonds
Red food coloring
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine dry ingredients. Lightly grease a cookie sheet. In a large bowl, beat together butter, sugar egg, almond extract and refrigerate dough for 30 minutes. Working with 1/3 of the dough at a time, roll heaping teaspoons of dough into finger shape. Press an almond firmly into one end for a nail. Squeeze in center to create a knuckle shape and use a paring knife to make slashes to form a knuckle. Paint "nails" with red food coloring diluted with water, and brush on with a clean artist's brush. Place cookies on baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes until pale golden.
