The Tulsa Meals On Wheels group needs volunteers. They've had to suspend service to clients in southwest Tulsa, because there are not enough volunteers to service the area. The News On 6's Rick Wells reports the lack of volunteers has meant an entire route was canceled.
At Christ the King Catholic Church, near 15th and Rockford, volunteers pack up meals for Meals On Wheels clients.
"We have ten routes," said volunteer Peg Rinaldi.
Peg Rinaldi is one of the volunteer coordinators at Christ the King Catholic Church. Her job is to make sure the clients get their meals.
Mike Loughran is one of the volunteer delivery drivers making sure people get their regular meal, plus bread, milk and dessert. On Fridays, clients who request it can receive an extra frozen meal for Saturdays.
Rinaldi says there's no heavy lifting involved and the deliveries take about an hour.
"Some of these people don't see anybody all day long. They are either old or infirm. You may be the only visitor they have, plus you're bringing them food. So, it just seemed right to do it," said volunteer Mike Loughran.
Loughran has been a Meals On Wheels volunteer for 10 to 15 years. He delivers meals every Friday. It's how he met Sarah Kelly.
"I always like seeing you folks. I look forward to it," said Sarah Kelly as her meal was delivered.
Loughran says when Sarah comes to the door she usually has a new joke to tell.
Meals On Wheels needs volunteers, especially for a route in southwest Tulsa, but for other routes too.
