It's crowded. It's noisy. And, the air is thick with exhaust fumes. But, thousands of race fans wouldn't want to be anywhere else. The News On 6's Rick Wells reports the Chili Bowl Nationals are underway with 300 drivers from 29 states competing for the top prize. It will be awarded Saturday night at the QuikTrip Center.

This is the 22nd Chili Bowl. It's a unique event that brings NASCAR champions, drag racers and weekend warriors together for a week of racing under one roof. Tuesday night is a pre-qualifier, for rookies who've never raced here before. The News On 6 found a rookie whose name and face you might recognize.

During an early hot lap session, drivers were trying to get their cars in race shape, testing tire pressure and suspension. Back in the pit area, Tulsa Police Officer Scott Walton was waiting for his turn on the track.

"It's an opportunity I've wanted for a long time," said Scott Walton.

Walton, 26 year vet of the Tulsa Police Department and former spokesman for Crimestoppers, loves dirt track racing. A car owner called and said he needed a driver and Scott Walton stepped up to the challenge.

"The speeds and capabilities of the cars. When it's that close, it happens so fast," said Scott Walton.

There's adrenaline. It's exciting. It's the Chili Bowl. There's really nothing else like it.

As his practice time got closer, Walton got shoe-horned into his car for last minute checks and adjustments. Then, it was off to the track for the first of two practice sessions.

Before it's over, the Chili Bowl will feature current NASCAR drivers, drag racers and top sprint car competitors from around the country. For rookies, like Scott Walton, driving in the Chili Bowl is all about one thing.

We're here to have some fun. We're gonna have some fun," said Scott Walton.

The Chili Bowl has been sold out since June.
