SHAWNEE, Okla. (AP) _ Shawnee officials decide to sue in an attempt to recoup money they spent on failed improvements to a water treatment plant.

The city filed the lawsuit this week in Pottawatomie County District Court against a Muskogee design firm; a Tyler, Texas, company and a Little Rock, Arkansas, consultant.

City Manager Jim Collard says the lawsuit was filed after months of negotiating with the defendants in a good faith effort to solve the problems at the facility.

Collard says the negative pressure ozonization system recommended by the firms doesn't meet the water treatment standards as promised.

The system was installed in 2004, but the city hasn't been able to use it. Collard says water has continued to be treated with the old chlorination process.

The companies couldn't be immediately reached for comment.
