Investigators allege Cherokee/Wagoner County prosecutor covered up drug crimes

Updated:
WAGONER, Okla. (AP) -- Recently unsealed court documents indicate that state investigators believe that an eastern Oklahoma district attorney helped cover up drug crimes.

Documents dating as far back as September were unsealed last week. In one filing, the state Attorney General's office asked for permission to wiretap cell-phone conversations of District Attorney Richard Gray and two of his top assistants.

Those two assistants, office manager Vyrl Keeter and former prosecutor Janet Bickel, already have been indicted by the state multicounty grand jury.

Gray is the top prosecutor for Adair, Cherokee, Sequoyah and Wagoner counties. He has not been indicted and has maintained his innocence while authorities continue their investigation.
