OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- State higher education Chancellor Paul Risser is resigning to take over a new research department at the University of Oklahoma.

State Regents for Higher Education accepted the resignation during a meeting Thursday morning.

Risser says he and OU President David Boren have been discussing such a move for several months.

Risser has been chancellor since 2003 when he was hired following the resignation of Hans Brisch.

Vice Chancellor Phil Moss will serve as interim chancellor.
