CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) _ Reigning world bull riding champion Matt Austin had the better score going into yesterday's competition at Cheyenne Frontier Days. But it was Billy Schumacher who came out on top.
Austin earlier scored an 87, third best at Frontier Days. He had no trouble riding the bull he drew yesterday.
But that bull didn't have much spunk, and the Wills Point, Texas cowboy scored a 73.
Schumacher, meanwhile, followed up an earlier 82 with an 85 and took the overall lead. The Wisconsonite passed Nebraska cowboy Dustin Elliott, who had a 165-point total.
Austin had to settle for fourth in the standings. He won last year's Frontier Days with a three-bull total of 249, earning him $14,889. He finished the season by breaking Ty Murray's season earnings record, pulling in $320,765.
