Lanham Furniture in Broken Arrow closing its doors for good

He was the boss "and" the TV star. That was the famous catch-phrase of Wynn Lanham of Broken Arrow's Lanham Furniture. He and his wife Pat had a lot of fun with their silly but down-to-earth TV ads for the store. But after 20-plus years in the furniture biz, they're retiring.

News on 6 reporter Steve Berg tells us Pat still says she does all the work.

They were fixtures in the local furniture business, no pun intended. On a whim, Wynn came up with his catchphrase that anyone who watched TV in Green Country 20 years ago should instantly remember. Wynn Lanham: "I can't go anywhere that people don't recognize me as the boss and TV star." Pat Lanham: "He might think he's the boss." Wynn laughs when he recalls the stir he caused. Wynn Lanham: "Well, when I first started, I had some ladies that wanted to hang me.”

Truth be told though, Pat says she really did do all the work. Pat Lanham: "I mean it was just him and I in the beginning and that was it."

Wynn and Pat met when they both worked at a furniture store in Arizona and realized they both shared a love of the business. Pat Lanham: "Yes, still do! Still do." Likewise, their longtime location in Broken Arrow was just fate. Wynn Lanham: "There just happened to be a store for sale here and I was looking to buy a store."

They've been in Broken Arrow through thick and thin, including a huge fire in 1999 that destroyed the store. But they rebuilt and kept right on going.

It sounds like the hardest thing they've ever had to do is say goodbye. Pat Lanham: "I cried for two weeks when we made the decision, I couldn't talk to anybody." Wynn Lanham: "But y'know when you get old and fat, you don't have any choice." Wynn Lanham: "But we've made a lot of good friends during that time." Who knew the gruff-sounding guy in the TV ads was really an old softie.

There's no set date for the store to close. They'll just keep selling till it's gone. Once they retire, Wynn and Pat say they'll do some traveling in their RV and spend time with their 21 grandkids.
