OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The Oklahoma Tax Commission is notifying about 1,000 Oklahomans that they owe taxes from Internet cigarette purchases.

Under state law, individuals aren't supposed to buy untaxed cigarettes in quantities of more than 40 cigarettes, the equivalent of two packs.

Tax Commission spokeswoman Paula Ross says the agency wants Oklahomans to know the practice is illegal and that there are consequences.

Ross says a person buying more than 40 untaxed cigarettes is technically required to have a license to sell cigarettes, but says most taxpayers aren't doing that.

Under federal law, Ross says out-of-state companies are required to make monthly reports on tobacco sales.
