Northeast Oklahoma firefighters taking part in special fire training

Firefighters from across the state are in Oklahoma City this week for training, including several members of the Tulsa Fire Department.

Most of Monday's exercises took place in a classroom, but later this week, the crews will move outdoors to learn more about structure collapse rescues. They are also learning how to use two new FEMA capable trucks that will launch in 2007. One will be in Tulsa, the other in Oklahoma City.

The training lasts eight days. R Ellis with the Tulsa Fire Department: "primary thing is safety. We protect ourselves; we're no good to anyone else if we're hurt, so we look at the safe way of affecting rescues."

Other communities within a 50 mile radius of Tulsa also sent firefighters to the training. It’s a way for several local departments to work together should the need arise.
