Audit shows money missing from Sallisaw drug fund

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A state audit of the Sallisaw Police Department shows money missing from its drug fund.

The special audit was released Monday by State Auditor and Inspector Jeff McMahan. It was requested by the Sallisaw Board of Commissioners and covered April 1999 through April 2005.

Gary Philpot -- who served as police chief during the time -- says no money is missing and the numbers should add up.

Auditors were unable to determine exactly how much money was missing because of conflicting amounts in drug records. It says somewhere between $650 and $1,300 in drug fund money is missing.

The audit also says receipts provided by the former chief were questionable.

Sequoyah County District Attorney Richard Gray said he may ask the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for additional investigation.
