State Senate Democrats announce funding proposal for education

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ School teachers would get a $3,000 a year raise under a more than $195-million education program announced Tuesday by Democrats in the state Senate.

Senate President Pro Tem Mike Morgan says the plan takes a giant leap forward in paying Oklahoma teachers at the regional average.

The plan also would double to $10,000 the bonus for teachers who receive National Board Certification and provide more than $35.5-million for alternative education and to pay for rising utility bills.

Other funding increases include $5- million for early childhood education and nearly $2.5-million for the mentor teacher program. It also includes $1.7-million for the parents as teachers program and $3.2-million to provide services for the developmentally disabled.
