Charges expected in Hughes County jail fire

HOLDENVILLE, Okla. (AP) -- New charges are expected this week against four Hughes County inmates believed to have assaulted a jailer and started a fire.

Hughes County Sheriff Houston Yeager says the inmates are accused of attacking a jailer on Saturday and using a cigarette lighter to set fire to trash in an empty cell in the underground jail.

The fire was contained in the cell. But the lack of windows caused the smoke to fill the jail and forced authorities to evacuate its 33 inmates for two hours as firefighters used fans to clear out the smoke.

Two inmates were treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation and released. The jailer who was hurt, Jake Haren, was treated for contusions and released.
