Tulsa's very first weatherman came by The News on 6 Thursday for a visit.

Harry Volkman forecasted the weather at KOTV from 1950 to 1952. He got his weather information from a shortwave radio in Morse code, translated it and drew the map with a piece of paper and a marker.

He also depended on the community to help forecast. "We used to have spotters on the roofs of buildings on the southwest edge of town in the old days and emphasize that alot that every town should have spotters. We had no radar to follow storms.”

Volkman's career eventually took him to Chicago where he worked as a weatherman for nearly 45 years.

We want to thank Harry Volkman for coming by and sharing some Oklahoma memories with us.
