Edmond teen killed by falling tree

EDMOND, Okla. (AP) Students and teachers at Edmond North High School are mourning the loss of a student who died in a freak accident.

Edmond fire officials say 17-year-old Tamra Colvin was killed Sunday night when a dead tree fell on her. According to a fire department report, Colvin was sitting on a hammock with her boyfriend when the tree collapsed.

Colvin was taken to Edmond Medical Center, and died from her injuries there.

Police say the tree was about 10.5 feet tall and three feet in diameter and struck Colvin in the head.

Colvin was a junior at Edmond North High School, where she participated in the choir.

Principal Ed Story says counselors were on hand Monday to help students cope with Colvin's death.
