Purdy man dies from rattlesnake bite

Updated:
PURDY, Okla. (AP) -- A 25-year-old Purdy man has died after being bitten by a timber rattlesnake.

The uncle of Bobby Don Womack says his nephew was bitten Saturday evening while trying to catch the snake. Joey Williams says Womack was on the way to a hospital with his father when their car got a flat tire. He says Womack passed out, and another motorist stopped to take him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials with the state medical examiner's office say Womack is the first victim in Oklahoma to die from a bite in the wild in at least 25 years.

Williams says when Womack went to grab the baby snake, he was bit on his right hand between the thumb and finger. The bite apparently hit an artery.
