A historic groundbreaking in downtown Tulsa for the arena. It's the most expensive item in the Vision 2025 plan.
News on 6 reporter Emory Bryan says Wednesday was only the ceremonial start of construction because a lot of work has already been done. But it was a chance for all the people who led the vision effort to celebrate by turning dirt in the middle of the arena site.
The $123-million arena will take more than 2 years to build, but the site will radically change soon. Mass excavation begins soon for the arena, which the mayor says will change downtown forever.
Tulsa Mayor Bill LaFortune: "We're not just building an arena to build an arena, this is a public investment that will bring dollars to Tulsa, will build people to Tulsa, and help us compete with other cities."
Tulsa's arena will be smaller than the one in Oklahoma City, but larger than some in similar sized cities. It will be large enough to host a Big 12 basketball tournament, and is planned for an opening in the spring of 2008.
