Governor Brad Henry Seeks Federal Drought Assistance

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Governor Brad Henry sends a letter to nine other governors asking them to join in his request for President Bush to re-authorize dormant agricultural and livestock assistance programs.

Henry sent the letter last week to the US Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency asking that the programs be reactivated.

An FSA official says Congress would have to pass legislation to revive the programs.

Henry says drought and scorching temperatures had taken a heavy toll on much of the nation.

He says Oklahoma has been "particularly hard hit."

Henry sent letters to governors in Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico and South Dakota.
