Scholarship will allow Oklahoma's Pendleton to leave football

Updated:
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Oklahoma defensive tackle Carl Pendleton says he'll give up football after this season to enter graduate school and concentrate on his family and academics.

Pendleton is a junior from Sapulpa and the legal guardian of his 10 year old brother Kierstan. He'll receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship from the National Football Foundation. He says with the responsibility of raising his brother he realizes football isn't the best choice for him.

He's a sociology major with a 3.86 grade point average and is one of 13 college football players awarded the scholarship.

Pendleton started OU's first two games this season and has played in all seven. He has 31 career tackles and 4 quarterback sacks.
