A Tulsa teacher sets her sights on the bright lights of Broadway. She's entered an online dance contest for a shot at the big stage. News on 6 reporter Ashli Sims has her story.
These days, thoughts of Broadway are never too far away for Leslie Goshko.
"What performer doesn't want to go perform on Broadway," said drama teacher Leslie Goshko.
Goshko was surfing the internet when she came across an ad for the Big Bopper Dance Topper contest, the Grand Prize a chance to dance in the Broadway production of “Hairspray.â€
She says she had to go for it.
"I thought well, I'll give it a try, cause I had a week until it was due. Ran out and got a camera and put it and crossed my fingers," said Goshko.
Leslie Goshko's funky, jazzy 60's routine struck a chord; online voters made her a top ten favorite, and a month later she vaulted into the top three. She hopes the votes keep on coming, so far she's in the lead, a favorite of the judges; one says Goshko reminds him of Ellen DeGeneres.
“But with training, I think Ellen DeGeneres is a great dancer,†Goshko said.
Goshko says she doesn't even know what the role would be, and it doesn’t matter.
“Anything, anything would be a thrill. Cause then I could put Broadway on my resume. Then it would be Tulsa, Tulsa, Tulsa, 'King and I' Broadway," said Goshko.
It's safe to say we know what this teacher wants for Christmas. And if she lands the role it will definitely be a happy New Year.
Leslie Goshko says her students and fellow teachers at the Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences have been her biggest fans.
