Government study shows fewer inmates on death row in 2005

Updated:
WASHINGTON (AP) There's been a dip in the number of prisoners being moved to death row.

A federal study shows fewer inmates went to death row in 2005. 128 inmates were moved to death row in 2005, the third consecutive year with a decline in yearlong totals. It's the lowest number of prisoners put on death row since 1973.

Sixteen states executed 60 prisoners last year, one more inmate than in 2004. Some 3,254 inmates were awaiting execution at the end of 2005.

The study was conducted by the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
