Crash Kills Independence, Kansas Couple

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. (AP) -- A man and a woman from southeast Kansas are dead after their pickup truck and an 18-wheeler collided near Independence Monday afternoon.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says the 75-year-old driver Gerald Steffan and 68-year-old Jeanette Steffan of Cherryvale were killed in the crash at US 160 and US 169 in Montgomery County. Troopers say the Steffans' pickup slammed into the semi after the big rig failed to yeild at a stop sign.

Truck driver Chris Hurt of Justin, Texas, was not charged. He and a passenger escaped injury.
