Midwest, Plains Dig Out From Snow

Updated:
UNDATED (AP) While residents of the southern states recover from deadly tornadoes spawned by a major winter storm system, the Plains states and the Midwest are digging out from heavy snow caused by the same system. More than a foot of snow fell in many areas.

In Duluth, Minnesota, a several-mile strip of land on Lake Superior was battered by heavy snowfall and heavy winds whipping off the lake. Snow drifts of 15 feet reached telephone wires, burying cars and even some buildings.

The weather service has now lifted a blowing snow advisory for parts of North Dakota. It's the first time the state has not been under a weather watch, warning or advisory since early in the week.

Major highways across the Midwest and Plains states have been reopened. But blowing snow continues to make driving somewhat dicey in some areas.
