School Honored For Diet Efforts

Updated:
HOLDENVILLE, Okla. (AP) -- Moss Elementary School near Holdenville is the first school in the state to become certified under a national program intended to reduce obesity through better nutrition and fitness.

Officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and state Education Department presented the school with the Gold Level Certification under the USDA's Healthier School Challenge program.

To get the certification schools must serve fresh fruits and vegetables, whole-wheat foods and low-fat or skim milk among other standards.

Moss Principal Deena Cartwright says her food service director spent the summer filling out applications and planning ways to win student and local support for healthier lunches.
