Watermelon Officially Becomes State Vegetable

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Legislation declaring the watermelon as Oklahoma's official state vegetable was among a series of bills signed into law Tuesday by Governor Brad Henry.

Oklahoma already had the strawberry as its state fruit, so Rush Springs Democratic state Representative Joe Dorman introduced a bill to make watermelon the state vegetable.

Rush Springs is home to an annual watermelon festival in August.
