Former Teacher Surrenders To Face Sex Charges

ELK CITY, Okla. (AP) -- A former Elk City middle school teacher charged with soliciting sex from students and with rape by instrumentation surrendered in Elk City Tuesday morning.
Prosecutors are charging 29-year-old John David Smithey with sex felony counts and he faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
Beckham County District Attorney Dennis Smith says the victims are 13- to 16-years-old and that Smithey contacted them with test messages on a cell phone.
Court records show Smithey is planning to post a $5,000 cash bail.
