Inhofe Backs Water Projects Bill

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma says a $14 billion bill funding water projects in the country is crucial to the transport of consumer goods.

Inhofe says more than half of the 192 commercially active lock and dam sites on inland and intracoastal waterways are at least 50 years old and need major rehabilitation.

The Oklahoma Republican says two-thirds of all consumer goods pass through harbors maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers.

The Water Resources Development Act was passed by the Senate Wednesday on a 91-4 vote, but the White House has said it is opposed to the measure.
