Still No Decision In Tulsa Immigration Plan

Updated:
Tulsa's City Council weighs in on the immigration debate. They held a meeting Thursday night to decide whether to order Tulsa Police to ask the immigration status of anyone arrested for a felony. News On 6 anchor Omar Villafranca was at the meeting. He reports as of 10 p.m. Thursday the council still had not come to a decision.

Almost 100 people showed up to hear the council’s discussion. Thirty-two people signed up to speak on the immigration measure at Thursday nights meeting, which means it could be a very long night for the council. Those who oppose the measure say it is unconstitutional, mean spirited and will cause more problems for Tulsa Police and the community. Supporters say the measure enforces the law.

“What about the citizens who are victims at the hands of illegal aliens that we have here in Tulsa? Why must we wait for an individual to be arrested for a felony before we ask about citizenship?” asked Wendell Neal with the Tulsa Minutemen.

“Tulsa, Oklahoma, like Oklahoma is being known as the most anti-immigrant city in America,” Reverend Victor Orta with the American Dream Coalition said.

Leaders of the Tulsa Minutemen Project and Outraged Patriots, as well as leaders from the Coalition of Hispanic Organizations and the American Dream Coalition attended Thursday’s meeting. The crowd did get loud during parts of the meeting, and the council had to quiet them down.

So far, there’s been no decision on the measure.
