Hundreds Gather To Catch A Glimpse Of Tulsa's Belvedere

The excitement started building earlier Friday for the unearthing of Tulsa’s Belvedere. Crowds gathered outside of the courthouse, all wanting to witness Tulsa's past meeting its present. All eyes and camera lenses were on Tulsa's vault. The News On 6’s Ashli Sims reports it's a much different scene than the one captured at the very same spot 50 years ago.

"I was surprised. Fifty years ago it wasn't this big,” said 1957 attendee Certis Taylor.

In 1957, Cheryl Forrest was just 4 years old, but that day is indelibly printed on her memory.

"I remember it was a nice day, much like this one with some sun and some clouds, and I remember being intimidated because it was up high and I was by myself," Forrest said.

The Belvedere girls were captured on film and featured in Time magazine. They had no idea then, that people would come from all over the world to see the car again.

"I think this is one of the coolest events, being a car guy,” said Massachusetts resident Silvester Humaj. “I have a 1959 Buick. I've had a bunch of 50’s and 60’s cars. I love old cars. I love GMs. I cannot imagine being anywhere else as cool as this."

She may not be as shiny and new as she once was, but the Belvedere's return has put a shiny spin on the city.

"They were so far-sighted 50 years ago. I don't think they could have anticipated the excitement that this would create, but how great for the city,” said Forrest.

"It's an amazing event. It's my first time in Oklahoma. Love this part of the country. It's just fantastic," Humaj said.
