Safety stressed when ' Walking To School'

School crossing guards say there's been some close calls of kids getting hit by cars while walking to and from school. That's why Alcott Elementary School students, teachers, parents and emergency workers formed a safety parade for International Walk to School Day.

Traffic Safety Police officers say its important for kids to know the safest way to walk to school, but parents also need to know the route their kids take. Traffic safety coordinator Craig Murray: "Because sometimes parents don't know which way their kids go, and if something were to happen to a child or if they needed to find them, this is a good way for having the parents know, 'Ok, this is how my child goes, this is how I need to retrace my steps if I need to find them."

A newly painted crosswalk was also presented at 46th Street North and Hartford. About a hundred kids cross that intersection every day on their way to school.
