Helping eastern Oklahoma teenage girls to afford a prom dress

Updated:
Prom season is coming up, and every girl wishes for a beautiful dress to wear to the big dance. But for some families, prom dresses are not in the budget.

News on 6 reporter Rick Wells has found a student at Sperry High School who, along with some friends, is making those prom wishes come true.

Amber and Ashley Helms and Jessica Hart from Pitcher loaded up the car and drove 2 hours to Sperry to look at prom dresses. Tiffany Grant started Prom Wishes Inc. a couple of years ago as a 4H project. "I wanted to get more involved in the community." She felt helping other girls make their prom wishes come true was a pretty good calling.

That first year she helped 19 girls. Last year, 125 and this year she says they may double that. "We pretty much provide everything but the date; they have to provide that on their own."

The three girls from Pitcher have the date, just no dress. They've gotta be referred by a school counselor and there's some paperwork when they get to Sperry, after that, they shop. "Do you know what colors you guys want?" There are dozens to choose from plus shoes, bags, gloves and other accessories. When they've found 5 or 6 or 8 dresses they think they'd like, off they go to try them on.

One of the girls helping is Teah Hill. Last year she got a dress here and it absolutely made her night. "I talked about it for about a month." This year she's doing more than talking, she's helping.

Once the girls had tried on one of their selections, they called us in to have a look. Quite a transformation jeans and sweats, to beautiful young ladies, with a little help from some new friends in Sperry.

Along with the dress, the girls will also get their hair and nails done. If you have an old prom dress hanging in the closet, Prom Wishes Inc can put it to good use.
