(Stillwater-AP) -- Full-squad practices have kicked off at
Oklahoma State.
But starting linebacker Kenyatta Wright was a no-show at
yesterday's practice session.
Wright missed all three workouts on the practice field. But
coach Bob Simmons says Wright's still on the team -- for now.
Wright was a pre-season All-Big 12 Conference pick. He's the
centerpiece to a linebacking corps that is being billed as one of
the nation's best.
Simmons says Wright was excused from yesterday's practices. But
he won't say anything more.

(OU-Freshmen)
(Norman-AP) -- Some incoming freshmen have impressed first-year
Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops.
Stoops says he likes the work of freshman quarterback Jason
White. Stoops says the Tuttle standout should be given every
opportunity to prove himself.
Stoops says White could be a backup for quarterback Josh Heupel
-- or actually threaten Heupel's starting position.
Wide receive and kick returner Julius McMillan is another player
who is figuring large in Stoops' offensive plans.
McMillan is a former top prospect from Altus who spent one year
in the Kansas State program. He sat out last season after laving
the Wildcats and should have three seasons of eligibility with the
Sooners.

(OU-Gymnastics Coach)
(Norman-AP) -- The University of Oklahoma will be looking for a
new men's gymnastics coach next month.
O-U Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione says coach Greg Buwick
has resigned his position effective August 31st.
Buwick has been at O-U for 21 years. He's been head coach of the
men's gymnastics program for the last 16 years.
Buwick was voted National Coach of the Year in 1991. He also
earned Coach of the Year honors from the conference four times and
in the Midwest Region three times.
During Buwick's tenure, the gymnastics squad recorded 224 wins,
87 losses, five conference team titles and an N-C-A-A team national
championship.

(NSU-Curtis)
(Tahlequah-AP) -- Two-a-day drills are the daily routine for the
Redmen of Northeastern State.
Drills began yesterday for the 1999 football campaign. More than
100 prospects have taken to the practice field, including Dallas
Curtis, a 1997 all-conference honoree.
Curtis -- a junior linebacker from El Reno -- sat out last
season after sustaining a severe neck injury just two days before
the season opener.
Curtis thought his playing career might be over. But doctors
diagnosed the injury as a pinched nerve and said it would heal with
medication, rehabilitation and rest.
Curtis says that if surgery had been required, he wouldn't have
played again.

(NEO-Patterson)
(Miami-AP) -- Northeastern A-and-M coach Dale Patterson will
have his hands full tonight.
Patterson will greet close to 150 football players to begin
preparing them for the 1999 season.
The Golden Noresmen are coming off their first-ever Southwest
Junior College Football Conference title and a 9-and-3, including a
31-to-nothing Red River Bowl victory over Coffeyville.
N-E-O was ranked Number One in the nation in eh final N-J-C-A-A
poll last season. The team enters the 1999 season ranked 17th.
The Norsemen will work out at 6 p-m tomorrow and will start
three-a-days on Thursday. The regular season kicks off September
second at home against national champion Butler County.
