In August, the unemployment rate declined to 3 percent in Tulsa, 3 percent in the MSA, 3.1 percent in the state, and 4.2 percent nationally. Only 13,150 people are currently on the unemployment register in the Tulsa area. However, there are 20,660 people living within a one-hour drive from Tulsa who are registered as unemployed. Job opportunities and higher wages, especially those at the lower end of the spectrum, are luring an increasing number of commuters to the urban area.

The average unemployment rate during the first eight months of the year was 3.2 percent in Tulsa (down from 3.4 percent during the same period last year), 3.2 percent in the MSA (down from 3.5 percent), 3.9 percent in the state (down from 4.6 percent), and 4.4 percent nationwide (down from 4.7 percent).
