Tulsa Retail Sales

Total retail sales (excludes automobile sales) increased to more than $3 billion in the Tulsa area during the first two quarters, up $210.2 million (7.4 percent) from the same period last year. Statewide retail sales increased 5 percent, and 6.9 percent nationwide, during the same period.

General merchandise earned top billing with an incredible $65 million increase during the first half of the year. Changes in other retail sectors were as follows: lumber—up $48.5 million; apparel—up $23.8 million; restaurants—up $18 million; food—up $14.7 million; furniture—up $9.6 million; electronics and computers—up $9.1 million; liquor—up $1.9 million; gasoline—up $1.6 million; prescription drugs—up $1.5 million; and used merchandise—up 875,000. Auto accessories (including automobile repair), down $3.8 million, was the only declining sector.
