Oklahoma academic standards up over five years

Updated:
Oklahoma's academic standards are
improving.

The American Federation of Teachers says Oklahoma has made progress over the last five years in implementing a standards-based
system of education.

The group says in a report that English and math standards are clear and specific for all grades. But world history standards are still vague at the elementary and middle school level.

The teacher federation noted that Oklahoma is implementing a new assessment system. All students must pass the eighth-grade reading
test to get a driver's license. The state is also developing a plan to require students to pass new end-of-course exams to graduate from high school.
