Nine cities seek to hold prisoners at Tulsa Jail

(Tulsa-AP) -- Nine cities in Tulsa County would like to be able to use the Tulsa Jail to house prisoners who are booked on municipal charges.

Those cities include Bixby, Broken Arrow, Collinsville, Glenpool, Jenks, Owasso, Sand Springs, Skiatook and Sperry. They've asked the Tulsa County Criminal Justice Authority to place the matter on its agenda.

The jail was funded by a 5/12 cent county sales tax.

The lockup is technically a county jail. The county must accept prisoners who are booked on state charges, but isn't obligated to make room for people who are arrested on municipal complaints except if the prisoners are booked by the city of Tulsa.

The proposal calls for each city to get space at the jail equal to one-half of the total capacity at their own lockups.
