National Army Museum being proposed for Fort Sill

Updated:
(Fort Sill-AP) -- Few have been able to glimpse the thousands of rare artifacts from America's western frontier tucked away in Fort Sill's museum archives.

That's because of cramped exhibit space at the southwestern Oklahoma museum only allows 25 percent to be seen.

State legislators are hoping to fix that problem this month in a big way.

Oklahoma's political leaders are prepared to invest $15 million toward the construction of the National Army Museum of the Southwest at Fort Sill.

The proposed 102-thousand-square-foot museum would be built just off Interstate 44 with a one-time bill to taxpayers. It would be financially operated, maintained and staffed by Fort Sill personnel.

Hopes are this unique partnership between the military post and state will spawn a national tourist attraction.
