Presbyterian court hears arguments on role of gays

(Baltimore-AP) -- The Presbyterian Church's highest court is hearing arguments on whether practicing homosexuals should hold church office.

The church prohibits sexually active homosexuals from holding church office.

But Christ Church in Burlington, Vermont, rejects the rule as a non-essential tenet of the church.

Its lawyer is arguing that the rule should be treated only as a guide, because the issue is so divisive.

But the opposing lawyer argues that individual churches enter into a solemn contract with the church and must comply with its rules.

No ruling is expected before next week.
