Veterans remember Anzio beach

(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Oklahoma veterans remember a scene very different from the Italian resort town of Anzio.

Scott Wells and Bob Kennedy remember a beach where they tried to stay alive in foxholes and dugouts. That was after American Forces invaded Anzio in 1944 during World War Two.

Wells and Kennedy will return on Memorial Day as part of the 180th Infantry Regiment of the 45th Division to pay tribute to those who did not come home.

About 20 members of the Oklahoma-based 180th will dedicate a plaque at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery near Anzio. The plaque will commemorate the 858 members of the 45th Division who are buried there.

Wells was one of those who helped organize the trip and raise money for the marker.
