Former Oklahoman proposed for stamp

Updated:
(Norman-AP) -- A group of Argonia, Kansas elementary school students is working to get the face of Susanna Madora Salter on a postage stamp.

Salter is believed to be the first woman mayor ever elected in the United States. She was elected as Argonia's mayor in 1887 where she served for a year, and later lived in Norman.

Salter was elected with two-thirds of the vote at the age of 27.

Norman postmaster Andy Tengeres says getting a stamp from idea to issuance is a very challenging and exhausting process.

A previous stamp effort involving Salter failed in the mid-1980s because of lack of sufficient evidence of broad public support.

Salter moved to Norman to educate the two youngest of her eight children at the University of Oklahoma.
