Booster Seats

Updated:
(Chicago-AP) - A new study bolsters the federal government's claims that children are safer in booster seats. Researchers says kids who've outgrown safety seats are at significantly more risk of death or injury if they're strapped in seat belts instead of booster seats. They say children generally are not big enough to sit safely with a seat belt until about the age of nine. The study authors note government figures showing car crashes are the leading cause of death and disability for children older than one. Less than one percent of children older than age five were in booster seats during the study period. The findings appear in the current issue of the American Academy of Pediatrics journal.
