Voters being asked to fix Pottawatomie County jail

(Undated-AP) -- Pottawatomie County voters are being asked Tuesday to come up with sales taxes to fix the county jail.

Voters will decide whether to increase the countywide sales tax by a penny for a year to build a $4.5 million jail complex.

Municipal sales taxes and a school annexation also are on election ballots in several Oklahoma communities.

The Pottawatomie County sales tax proposal would raise sales tax rates in the county to 8.5 percent in Earlsboro and Wanette; 9.5 percent in Shawnee and Tecumseh; and 10.5 percent in Asher, Maud and McLoud.

Billy Monroe Hicks broke out of the jail in January and again in March. In his January escape, Hicks fled with another inmate. Hicks has since been moved to the Hughes County jail.
