Oklahoma State golfer named Big 12 Male Athlete of Year

Updated:
(Dallas-AP) -- Oklahoma State golfer Charles Howell was announced as the Big 12 Conference Male Athlete of the Year Thursday.

Howell was the Big 12 and NCAA men's golf individual champion in 2000. The junior from Augusta, Georgia, won the N-C-A-A championships by eight strokes at the Grand National Golf Club in Opelika, Alabama.

Howell shattered the individual scoring record by shooting 23 under par. The previous N-C-A-A record was 17 under held by four other golfers.

Howell was a first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection in 1999 and 2000.

Texas two-sport standout Erin Aldrich was named the Big 12 Female Athlete of the Year. Aldrich helped Texas win four N-C-A-A Division One track and field championships and was a first team All-American selection in volleyball.
