(Norman-AP) -- Former U-S Senator Fred Harris of Oklahoma will be honored by a statewide organization he helped found 35-years ago.

Harris is to receive the Indian Achievement Award tomorrow from Oklahomans for Indian Opportunity.

Harris will recognized during a reception by the all-tribes advocacy group, which will be celebrating its 35th anniversary.

Group executive director Iola Hayden says Harris is being honored primarily for his role in founding and developing the organization.

Harris is now a professor of political science at the University of New Mexico.

He served in the state Senate before being elected to the U-S Senate in 1964. He was re-elected in 1966 and served as national chairman of the Democratic Party.

Harris ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1976.
