BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) _ Former Oklahoma basketball basketball coach Billy Tubbs returned to his alma mater on Tuesday to become director of athletics at Lamar University.
Tubbs coached Lamar for four of his 28 seasons, going 75-46 from 1976-80 and leading the little-known Southland Conference program to the round of 16 in the 1980 NCAA tournament. That helped him land the job at Oklahoma, where he spent 14 seasons, reaching the NCAA finals in 1988.
He spent the past eight seasons at Texas Christian, turning a moribund program into a squad that consistently played above .500. He stepped down after this past season.
