Federal government promises money to repair I-40 bridge

The Bush administration promised $3 million in federal emergency relief funds Tuesday to help Oklahoma repair damage caused when a barge slammed into the I-40 bridge near Webbers Falls, killing 14 people.

US Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta says, “Repairing the I-40 Bridge over the Arkansas River as quickly as possible is a priority for our Administration. We will assist the state of Oklahoma in every way to minimize the interruptions on this important interstate route in America's heartland."

Repair costs are estimated at $15 million for a project that could take up to six months to complete.

Oklahoma officials have already authorized one and a half million dollars in emergency contracts to clear wreckage from the May 26 accident.
